MAKfam

MAKfam
39 W 1st Ave, Denver, CO 80223

I frequent the Baker neighborhood for coffee, so I was excited to learn a dumpling restaurant was setting up shop. MAKfam is not traditional Chinese cuisine but incorporates foundational elements adding their own unique twist. Bao, dumplings, skewers, and rolls are among the variety of small bite options. Fried rice and noodle dishes round out their larger offerings.

Food

Chinatown Dumplings (top left), Scallion Pancake (top right), Bao Buns (bottom) - Fried Tofu, Braised Pork Belly, Spicy Chicken (left to right)

Flavor and Texture - 36/60

Instead of ordering one larger dish, I ordered a few of their small bite options. I got their Chinatown Dumplings, Scallion Pancake, and Bao. Since there are three dishes I will score each out of 20 points.

I give 12 points to the dumplings as they were good but there was nothing inherently memorable about them. I did enjoy the dipping sauce as it had a hint of lemongrass.

Ten points for the Scallion Pancake. It was light and crispy which was nice, but a bit too oily. Again, the dipping sauce swoops in to save the day.

I ordered three Bao to round out my meal. One was fried tofu with a basil ranch dressing (4 points), another was a braised pork belly with hoisin sauce (5 points), and the last one was diced chicken with a spicy mayo (5 points). Each individual sauce tasted good and provided a unique twist. However, the sauce dominates the overall taste of each bao which is a shame as I think there could be a good balance of flavors with the right ratio.

Quality/Skillfulness - 7/10

I have had plenty of bao and dumplings in my time, so I understand the time commitment and effort into making these small morsels.

Value - 3/10

The dishes were okay, but they are not something I would pay at that price point knowing there are better options.

Dining Experience

Service and Setting - 4/5

Service was friendly, and I honestly enjoyed the vibe. I kinda wish it was a coffee shop instead.

Presentation - 4/5

The food looked great, and presented well.

Legitimacy or Creativity/Uniqueness - 4/5

I think there is something to be said in trying to create your own twist on traditional cuisine. It will work for some, but not others. Regardless, I commend the effort.

X-Factor/Memorability - 1/5

Eh...I like the dipping sauce. 🙃

Someday I will learn to take pictures of both sides of the menu

Total - 59/100

3 Stars - I really dig the atmosphere of this place. The small bite options are decent, but for the price I would rather go elsewhere. I may be persuaded to come back to try their larger offerings, but that may be a while. 😅
