Tofu Story
Once upon a time...there was a piece of tofu. It was delicious. The end.
Tofu Story is one of the newer Korean restaurants on Havana Street and a part of the ever growing list of Koreatown (K-Town) designations. The tofu is made in-house from US-sourced soybeans. Pretty neat!
Food
Flavor and Texture - 39/60
I am a sucker for Ddukbokki (spicy rice cakes), also spelled Tteokbokki, so I naturally order that as a side dish. This is accompanied by various other sides like kimchi, fish cake, and kkakdugi (cubed radish). I will rate these side dishes out of 15 points. I ordered Mandu Soon Tofu as my main dish which is a spicy tofu soup with dumplings. I will rate it out of 30 points.
The Ddukbokki was savory with a nice subtle hint of spice. Unfortunately, the rice cakes themselves were too chewy for my liking - 5 out 15 points. ðŸ˜
The kkakdugi was a little stiff and dense while the kimchi was okay, but could have used a little more salt (personal preference). The spice was not overpowering on any of the side dishes - 9 out of 15 points.
The Mandu Soon Tofu on the other hand...the tofu was soft and tender. I order medium spice for this dish, and it was not overpowering for my taste. The dumplings did not turn to mush either, despite the boiling hot broth upon initial serving. I would definitely order this again - 25 out of 30 points.
Quality/Skillfulness - 7/10
The quality of the Ddukbokki left a lot to be desired, but the real winner is the in-house made tofu.
Value - 7/10
Skip the appetizers. The value is in the tofu entrées.
Dining Experience
Service and Setting - 4/5
The atmosphere was modern and clean. There is plenty of parking out front, and the service was prompt.
Presentation - 3/5
The presentation was okay, nothing to write home about.
Legitimacy or Creativity/Uniqueness - 5/5
The in-house made tofu adds that unique twist, plus there is a viewing area for full transparency.
X-Factor/Memorability - 3/5
The tofu was top-notch. Other than that... 🤔
Total - 68/100
3.5 Stars - Great tofu soup. A good entry-level restaurant for Korean cuisine.
