Tokyo Premium Bakery
1540 S Pearl St, Denver, CO 80210

Scones and coffee are great, but do you know what's better? A super-soft milk bread pastry with a latte! Located on South Pearl Street, Tokyo Premium Bakery has slowly made a name for itself with its handmade sweet and savory Japanese pastries. All of their pastries are made fresh daily. Some are better than others but honestly you cannot go wrong with most of their offerings.

Being the snob that I am, the Italian import coffee is too astringent for my taste...so I would skip the coffee. I would encourage you to try a Houjicha latte which is roasted matcha that has more of a sweet and savory flavor compared to a traditional matcha latte.

Food

Flavor and Texture - 55/60

My top three pastries are the Beef Curry, Sunrise, and any with fruit as a topping. The Beef Curry is lightly fried with an airy crust. The filling is traditional Japanese curry with minced ground beef. I could eat five of these things and call it a day. They are that good.

The Sunrise is a soft Japanese milk bread with a sugar-crusted top. You can taste a slight hint of lemon after each bite. It looks rather simple, but warm out of the oven it is unmatched. I would pair it with a latte of some kind.

The Mixed Berries pastry consists of blueberries, one raspberry, and a mint leaf. The berries sit on-top of a creamy custard that compliments the flaky crust.

Not shown is their cheesecake. It is a Soufflé style cheesecake that does not have a crust but is light and fluffy. A must try!

Quality/Skillfulness - 9/10

The time and effort to churn out consistent pastries of this quality is on another level.

Value - 9/10

You can spend anywhere from $3-$5 on a single pastry. So, yes, it can get expensive if you buy a baker's dozen.

Dining Experience

Service and Setting - 3/5

More often than not, there is ample parking on South Pearl Street. If you loathe parallel parking, have a friend drive you. 😝

There is indoor seating but the place itself is fairly small, so on busy days it can feel crowded. Especially, if people line up on the inside to order. Line starts outside (please read the sign people).

Service is polite and quick. No complaints.

Presentation - 4/5

Without a doubt I can tell there is a conscious effort put into the presentation of each their pastries.

Legitimacy or Creativity/Uniqueness - 5/5

Find me another place that has Beef Curry pastry. I'll wait.

X-Factor/Memorability - 4/5

Did I mention the Beef Curry?

(sorry for the glare!)

Total - 89/100

4.5 Stars - I could eat here once a week. Definitely worth the effort to make the trip if you have never been. A great place to stop before or after a walk/run around Wash Park.
