Urban Burma
Part refugee community center and food hall, the Mango House is a short drive west from the Anschutz Medical Campus. I kick myself for not exploring this space sooner. Urban Burma is one of a few food stalls located inside the Mango House.
The food hall atmosphere itself will not win any awards, but that is okay, as the food more than compensates for the ambience. I have never had Burmese food, so I came in with zero expectations.
Food
Flavor and Texture - 50/60
I briefly skimmed the menu before I arrived, and settled on their "sampler" option which has a little bit of everything for newbies to try. However, I had their daily special, Mohinga, after talking with the attendant for a few minutes whom I later found out was the owner.
Mohinga is a rice noodle soup with fish (traditionally catfish). The catfish was lightly breaded and fried. The dish included a hard-boiled egg, cilantro, fried tempura vegetables, and lime. Red chile paste was provided to adjust the spice level.
For most people, a fish soup does not sound entirely pleasing. Yet, the catfish was flaky and did not have that fishy after-taste. The broth reminded me of a tonkatsu ramen broth as it was rich and savory. That being said, most of the dishes can be turned vegetarian or vegan, so I think it was a vegetable-based broth. Regardless, the crispiness of the catfish and vegetables paired well with the soft rice noodles. Unlike tonkatsu ramen, I was not left feeling overtly full but satisfied.
Quality/Skillfulness - 9/10
I have had fried catfish before, but not in this manner. In some ways it is similar to kastu chicken in regards to fried texture, but much lighter. In short, they know what they are doing.
Value - 9/10
Yes, it is worth the price. Depending on the dish, you are looking at $10-$15.
Dining Experience
Service and Setting - 4/5
It is a food hall. Nothing fancy. However, the service and talking with the owner set it apart. Parking available in back.
Presentation - 4/5
Dish looked appetizing, and there was some thought put into the layout of toppings.
Legitimacy or Creativity/Uniqueness - 5/5
Only Burmese restaurant I know, so yes they get all the points.
X-Factor/Memorability - 4/5
My conversation with the owner left a positive impression, and I look forward to returning to try the other items on the menu.

4.5 Stars - Amazing flavor. One of those hole-in-the-wall restaurants you want to stay in business for a long time. Vegetarian and vegan options available.
